Process
In Design Communication, we were asked to create a high-quality product whose target audience would be people who shop at Whole Foods and other similar stores. For the concept I chose, I wanted the packaging to tell a story; something that was inspired by a person of history.
Since our market was Austin, I decided to create something inspired by the lovely Lady Bird Johnson, a woman of integrity who inspired hope in America through Mother Nature. She is deeply loved in Austin, and it's no secret that Austin also really loves their cocktails. I came up with a beverage concept called: Lady Bird Cocktails: Cocktails with Integrity.
Logo Creation
I did a few typographic studies on some fonts that I liked, but I wasn't loving any of them. That's when I decided I should just draw it myself.
Label Sketches
I began to sketch out different ideas for how the label would be shaped and how the hierarchy would work.
Low-Fidelity Comps
Time to digitize the rest of the label! I explored a basic square-shaped label, one with floral inspiration for Lady Bird Johnson, and one shaped like a single flower petal.
I liked the middle concept the most, and I tried so hard to make it work. But something was missing. It was too pale, yet brightening up the outline of the rose made the text unreadable. Sometimes, all you need is to set it aside for the rest of the day or a few hours to really get your inspiration back.
High-Fidelity Comps
Refine
After taking a break, I realized the first comps of labels weren't working, and I went for a new round of designs. From these concepts, I decided combine the middle label from the low fidelity comps and the middle label from the high-fidelity comps to make it more interesting, having the label wrap around the bottle. I also used inspiration from the pattern on the right to for the neck label. Then it was off to print!

Hand-Crafted
The delicate labels were printed on recycled, natural paper and hand cut by yours truly. I applied the label directly to the bottle with a heavy spray adhesive.
